IPL for Skin Blemishes

Target Skin Imperfections

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive skin treatment that can be used to lighten or eliminate scars, sun spots, rosacea and other irregular pigmentation. The technology uses a high-powered, computer controlled hand-piece to deliver a pulse of light to the blemishes which are then heated to destruction and reabsorbed by the body.

Are treatments painful?

Whilst not painful, patients report feeling a stinging sensation similar to an elastic band being flicked against the skin. Your skin might feel slightly sore after the treatment, but this resolves in 24-48 hours. Pigmentation will go darker after the treatment and take 7-10 days to fade.

Acne and Scaring

A generalised term, acne scarring can be used to refer to a multitude of different marks that a breakout may leave behind. Acne scars come in different forms, including rolling, boxcar and ice-pick scars. Acne can be treated with IPL alone or in combination with other clinical treatments. Acne scars can be reduced using Fractional Laser therapy.

Hyperpigmentation

Sun spots, age spots, liver spots and actinic keratosis can be effectively treated with Intense Pulsed Light. They are associated with premature ageing and exposure to UV radiation from the Sun. Areas commonly affected are the hands, face, shoulders, arms and forehead.

Hyperpigmentation is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin.

Thread Veins

These are very fine dilated veins lying in the skin. They come from normal veins in the skin which grow much bigger than their usual size. Rosacea or facial thread veins respond very well to IPL therapy with minimal downtime. We usually recommend three treatments each one month apart initially.

Skin Rejuvenation (Photofacial)

IPL can reduce wrinkles and rough texture of photoaged skin. The procedure is non invasive and normally takes around 40 minutes. You can see a difference after one photorejuvenation treatment with IPL although the results usually develop gradually in the weeks following the procedure. These treatments can be readily combined with other minimally invasive aesthetic procedures such as dermal fillers and botulinum toxin to enhance results. The course may consist of 3-5 treatments set approximately 4 weeks apart.
